When just exposed with smartwatches, smart rings seem to be tinier, weightless, less conspicuous but more convenient for sleep tracking and highly accurate in measuring a pulse rate. However, there is one big hitch: swollen fingers. I always fear that my Oura Ring might run out of charge because every time I remove it, there is a risk of dislocating my knuckles. During summer, the only way out is putting my hand under cold water so as to free the ring.
The ring has never done this before.

It’s no magic – just good design. The notable gap in Evie smart rings adds to flexibility and style. You could gain some weight without worrying about buying another smart ring. That’s clutch because I’ve yet to see any smart rings that come in half sizes or allow for changes in your body shape with time (Evie Ring is available in sizes 5 through 12). It is a small detail, but it enhances comfort considerably – and with wearables, comfort matters most.
It is also tough enough to withstand showers, dishwashing and even swimming.

Battery life remains one of the most difficult issues for smart ring designers to solve. Truly circular shape of a ring demands a flexible battery small enough to wear on your finger but sufficient for powering all necessary components. Another challenge in engineering is presented by the Evie Ring open gap so it’s good having an acceptable battery life on it. It lasts for approximately four or five days between charges.
Although this isn’t earth-shattering within its class, another nice touch is a charging case. It has space for 10 charges; also there’s a groove into which a magnetic attachment holds the ring and finally, again importantly-it is enclosed safely in it unlike before. Now I can put it inside my bag or place it on my bedside without being afraid that I might lose it somewhere.
Evie Ring, according to Motivano’s first presentation, would have the accuracy of information and a very basic app designed to explain what all your personal health data means.

It reminded me a bit of a cooler pie chart that showed how sleep, active minutes, steps and calories burned all fit together in order to make one healthy body. I also appreciate that the app understands that some goals are meant to be pursued at different times only. You can only choose three at a time which is helpful in ensuring concentration on the most important things as well as allowing for gradual development of new habits.
Except for sleep tracking, everything seemed to be in line with my Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Oura Ring.

You can see trends in your heart rate, menstrual cycle as well as overall activity and workouts. For sleep tracking, you will have a separate tab that breaks down the data into sleep stages and factors such as resting heart rate, heart rate variability, SpO2, respiration rate and skin temperature variation. The journal enables you to track your cycle while noting various symptoms and moods that occur or simply track your emotions without having to keep tabs on any specific period.
It is almost usual but lacks this extra context I was looking for. Is it nice that the Evie Ring tracks my temperature? Yes and no. However, I can’t check out my historical temperature over time nor its relation to my menstrual cycle since last month. It explains why some data points are important but does not really provide useful insights about what is happening according to the numbers I have shared above! In fact this is generally an issue of most fitness tracking platforms; so I am mentioning it here because the context was supposed to differentiate Evie.
The Evie Ring is a new form of smart ring and health tracking device which is very refreshing, but still a first-gen device.

Nonetheless, like any other kind of first-gen device, it has some rough edges. However, the main problem I had was syncing. When I woke up in the morning, I clicked on the Evie app first and it would take a few minutes before it could sync with my phone. This means four or five K-pop TikToks that I could have scrolled through prior to getting myself out of bed – that’s if we were in 2024 instead of now.
Some firmware updates have made things considerably better over the past week; however, there are times when if I do not sync early enough in the day, it might not register my sleep from last night. Additionally, despite the fact that it can store seven days’ worth of data between syncs, sometimes my sleep does not get recorded at all if left un-synced by morning which is strange!
Additionally, sleep tracking accuracy has been a mixed bag. In general, it tends to match the duration of my Oura Ring and countless other sleep trackers, but over and over again it shows me as having much less deep sleep than them. For instance, one weekend, I slept for ten straight hours, but Evie only registered an hour of deep sleep.
Evie Ring is also currently available for iOS only.

That’s not unusual because I have witnessed many health tech companies releasing first on iOS before coming up with an android version later. It’s really disappointing.
I know a lot about the Evie Ring, especially its making. It is more comfortable because of the gap, charging it is more convenient and in general, it has the same feeling as an Oura ring. Additionally, it does this at a cheaper price and without monthly subscriptions.
This will depend on whether Movano’s bets on FDA clearance and strength in medicine would make the company stand out from its competitors. The smart ring space is about to become fiercely competitive. RingConn, Circular, and Ultrahuman are already eating into Oura’s market share. Amazfit, which produces many good budget smartwatches, has announced it will release a fitness centered smart ring before year-end 2021. The biggest game changer is Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Ring. Samsung has a huge name and if they do well here, other tech giants will follow suit sooner or later. Even Oura must be under pressure; leave alone smaller companies like Movano.
However, I am hoping that Evie Ring will weather this storm.
It has been nice seeing some thought put into the design and having a strong foundation here. I just hope it can take advantage of that opportunity to improve upon it.
Contracts, no one reads these. Here we have many agreements that no single person may read all and analyze. We said we will be counting up how many times “Agree” must be hit whenever we review some devices, as these are the agreements most people never read.
For your Evie Ring to work with your iPhone, you should pair it. This is by agreeing to iOS’s terms and conditions. You may also have to grant permissions on the Evie app to use Bluetooth, notifications, background app refresh and cellular data.
